Malaysia day 3
We started our day at the Selanger Pewter Company. We learned that tin is mined in Malaysia and pewter contains 97% tin. We were taken on a tour, and got to see first hand how pewter products are made. Additionally, we donned our "school of hard knocks" aprons and each created our own pewter bowl, from a flat disk. This involved lots of hammering! Next, it was off to the TTCC, Twin Towers City Center, for lunch, enjoying some outdoor time soaking in the sun, and shopping. From here, it was off to paint Batik fabric -very interesting and fun! We each chose a design for our fabric then poured hot wax on the outline of the image. The wax dries quickly, and you apply paint to the fabric. The dried wax on the fabric prevents paint from spreading, so you are able to create a design. Next, it was on to the history museum to learn more about Kaula Lumpur. We were able to see how the trade routes introduced Islam to the people of Malaysia. A quick stop back at the hotel, and we set off walking to a nearby street for more local food for dinner. As a group, we enjoy eating "family style" and being able to taste a variety of dishes. Thankfully, the rain held off this evening. We walked to a grocery mart to purchase food for the families in the village where we will be going tomorrow. We are taking large bags of rice, cans of sardines, and "biscuits" for the children. We were amused to learn biscuits mean cookies! We were sad to have to say goodbye to Eric, who has been our tour guide for the past few days. Tomorrow is an early morning, as we will be checking out of our hotel and heading about an hour drive south to stay with local families in a village. Doubtful there will be any kind of internet connection there and will certainly be different accomodations than what we have had these past couple of nights.
